How to quickly learn and memorize English words

Memory can and should be trained. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is especially true when it comes to learning foreign languages, where memorizing new words is very important.

Why is it difficult to memorize new words

  • Lack of associations. Learning English words is difficult if they are not related to our experience.
  • Unregular learning. Any information is forgotten quickly if it is not used regularly.
  • Overload. Trying to memorize too many words at a time is ineffective and can only hinder.
  • In this article, you will find the most useful tips and techniques that will help you memorize English words easily.

Create associations

Try to associate a new English word with a vivid image, imagine what the object denoted by the word looks like, feel what emotions the word evokes, or connect the pronunciation of a new word with the sound of already known ones.

These can be direct associations. For example, after learning the meaning of the word “spicy,” you imagine those spicy chicken wings that the waiter recommended to you (thus dividing his tip in half) and feel how much you would like to have some water then.

The associations can be completely unusual, and this works great when you're struggling to learn English words. Try to come up with some strange association for a word that is difficult to memorize. It may seem a bit weird, but the more absurd the association, the more effective it is in learning English words. For example, when it is difficult to memorize the meaning of the aforesaid word “spicy”, try this: “The whole SPACE of water won’t be enough to put that fire out!”. This is both an auditory and an emotional association, because, in addition to sounding similar, there is much more emotion here than in the previous, visual association with spicy wings, and you will remember the word faster.

Repeat words regularly

This tip on how to learn English words is not new, but it is still quite effective. So, work purposefully with new words:

  • keep your vocabulary;
  • use flashcards with words, either on paper or in the form of a mobile app;
  • repeat the words you have learned. The Spaced Repetition System (SRS) is a method that involves repeating information at regular intervals. The fewer mistakes you make during repetition, the less often you need to repeat the word. A lot of mobile language learning apps use this SRS principle.

pay attention to:

  • derivatives (work, worker, workshop, workout)
  • words with the same endings (revolution, conversation, negotiation, explanation) or prefixes (unreal, unusual, uncertain, etc.)
  • English words that have become international (department, foundation, fund, grant, volunteer, doctor, injection, anesthesia, document, budget, mobile phone, smartboard, etc.) But double-check to be sure. Not all English words that sound like those in your native language have the same meaning. For example, the word “data” in Ukrainian is not “date” but “information”.

In addition to these traditional tips, there are a few more effective recommendations that will help you learn English words quickly.

Immerse yourself in the language environment as much as possible

This is quite possible, even if you don't live in an English-speaking country. First of all, in the settings of your gadgets select the English language of use. This will ensure that you will be much more successful in learning English words.

Decorate your home with colorful stickers. This method is especially cool for those who have recently started learning the language. Put stickers with the English names of the items that surround you at home. The best thing about this method is that you don't need to memorize anything on purpose - your brain will easily remember the names of the things around you.

Actively use the words in practice

Talk to native speakers or friends who also want to improve their English. Attend speaking clubs or join online English-speaking communities based on your interests.

To learn English words, try to use context as much as possible. Learning English words without context is ineffective. It is comparable to just opening a dictionary and learning the words one by one. You will not memorize them because they are completely devoid of context. So, write notes and plans for the day in English, read in English, listen to music by English singers, and watch your favorite TV shows in English. Words are much better remembered in context.

Play games in English. In the settings of your favorite video games, select the English interface language. And real-life games are no less exciting. Play Alias, Monopoly, and other popular games in English, or make up your own games with the cards, for example: a player takes 10 flashcards with different words and has to make up a story using all 10 words. It will be fun and help you learn English words quickly. Such simple ways of organizing your daily life, space, and leisure will help you quickly memorize English words.

Avoid overloading yourself

Be realistic when planning your learning process and assess your capabilities. By taking small but regular steps, you will achieve results you will be proud of. Be patient and persistent, praise yourself for your progress, and don't be afraid of mistakes. Choose the methods of vocabulary enrichment that you like best, enjoy the learning process, and you will see your vocabulary grow significantly over time, giving you even more motivation to keep going.
