Sting. Shape of my heart. Lyrics and Symbolism
Shape of My Heart is one of the most iconic soundtracks featured in the final scenes of the cult late-20th-century film Léon: The Professional (1994).

The song was recorded a year before the film’s release, in 1993. Firstly released as a single, it was later included in the artist’s fifth studio album, Ten Summoner’s Tales. This is how the song’s author, the legendary Sting, described the original idea behind the track in one of his interviews:
I wanted to write about a card player, a gambler who gambles not to win but to try and figure out something; to figure out some kind of mystical logic in luck, or chance; some kind of scientific.
If you explore the song’s lyrics, it becomes clear that it is not actually about gambling. Even the title Shape of My Heart contains no direct reference to playing cards. To save you the trouble of searching for the lyrics, we invite you to read them below:
He deals the cards as a meditation.
And those he plays never suspect.
He doesn't play for the money he wins.
He don't play for respect.
He deals the cards to find the answer,
The sacred geometry of chance,
The hidden law of a probable outcome,
The numbers lead a dance.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier,
I know that the clubs are weapons of war,
I know that diamonds mean money for this art,
But that's not the shape of my heart.
He may play the jack of diamonds,
He may lay the queen of spades,
He may conceal a king in his hand,
While the memory of it fades.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier,
I know that the clubs are weapons of war,
I know that diamonds mean money for this art,
But that's not the shape of my heart,
That's not the shape…
The shape of my heart.
If I told you that I loved you,
You'd maybe think there's something wrong,
I'm not a man of too many faces,
The mask I wear is one.
But those who speak know nothing,
And find out to their cost,
Like those who curse their luck in too many places,
And those who fear are lost,
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier,
I know that the clubs are weapons of war,
I know that diamonds mean money for this art,
But that's not the shape of my heart.
That's not the shape of my heart.
That's not the shape…
The shape of my heart.
Using the metaphor of a card game, the song tells a story about life, choice, and human nature in a philosophical way. The protagonist’s goal is not the win itself, but the search for truth, meaning, and honesty with oneself – an understanding of life’s rules and one’s own path to genuine human essence. The main character wants to be seen for who he truly is, to have others understand the “shape of his heart,” that is, his inner self and core values.

Symbolism in Sting’s Shape of My Heart
The central metaphor of the song is a card game, which represents life itself. Just as cards are dealt randomly in a game, people do not choose the initial conditions of their lives. However, once the cards are in hand, the player decides how to play them. The same applies to life: we do not choose where or when we are born, but as we grow older, we take responsibility for how we use what we have. Thus, the cards in the song symbolize fate, life roles, the diversity of human nature, and the range of moral choices.
Each suit also carries its own symbolic meaning:
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier,
I know that the clubs are weapons of war,
I know that diamonds mean money for this art,
But that's not the shape of my heart.
In the chorus, all the suits are explicitly explained, except for hearts. So let’s analyze the symbolism of the suits according to the song’s lyrics. Spades represent difficulties and challenges, clubs symbolize knowledge and weapons, both literally and figuratively, while diamonds stand for money and material values. Later in the song, we hear the line "But that's not the shape of my heart", which can be interpreted as “this is not what I stand for” or “this is not who I am”. Therefore, hearts symbolize the inner world, the soul, and emotions.
A deck contains all four suits, which represents the diversity of life: it includes different spheres and situations, because real life is multifaceted.
The song also mentions face cards – the jack, the queen, and the king. They represent different roles that people take on throughout their lives.
The central image of the song is “the shape of my heart,” which is also its title. The heart symbolizes one’s inner self and honesty with oneself, reminding us that, among the variety of life circumstances and roles, the most important thing is to understand who we truly are and remain sincere with ourselves, even if others may not always understand us.
Phrases worth remembering:
To deal the cards — literally “to distribute cards,” but in the song it has a figurative meaning – to determine circumstances.
To lead someone a dance — an idiom meaning “to make someone nervous” or “to cause someone a great deal of trouble or worry”.
That’s not the shape of my heart — a wordplay that in this context can be understood as “this is not who I am” or “this is not what I stand for.”
